Japanese Noh theater mask of KITOKU. A man's mask made by the technique of dry lacquer "Kanshitsu" (method of applying layers of hemp cloth between lacquer). This mask was worn when performing in Shinto shrine during religious festival.

The mask represent KITOKU, which is a Gagaku dance with its roots in ancient Korea. It is also known as Komagaku.

It is danced heroically with masks and spears. This is a traditional face that has been handed down from generation to generation, and its deeply chiseled features are closer to the faces of the West that have traveled along the Silk Road than to East Asians.
