Here is a stunning Japanese enameled box using the uchidashi (hammered out) enamel technique. The box is worked with a beautiful flowering plant in various shades of red and green enamels.
The interior of the box is lined with a cotton or rough silk-like material that is beige or light brown incolor. The small area where the lid's inner lining meets the corner edges of the base is worn due to aging. The background is left unfinished with a wonderful textured surface to contrast with the high glossy enamels of the flowering plant. Generalized dealers often refer to these works as "Mission Style" where the natural beauty of the metal is emphasized with the edges of the box secured with rivets; please referto the images. The box is in excellent vintage condition without any major faults such as chips, hairlines, losses or restoration. As fellow collectors know, the uchidashi technique produces a wonderfully enameled design in a high reliefor raised surface. These raised enamels becomes susceptible to damage so a large percentage of these works have not survived the rigors of time. The length of this box is approximately 5.75 inches.
The width of this box is approximately 4.0 inches. The height of the box is approximately 1.5 inches. Overall, an attractive work in excellent condition that maintains a nice balance of the rich color of the metal and the bold depiction of the flowers. Due to the fragile nature of Japanese cloisonné enamels, this item will be double boxed and packed with tremendous care.
