A traveling jacket used in the Edo period(1800s) and often seen in ukiyoe prints. It is also impressive for its rounded appearance when unfolded. The "kappa" was used not only to protect against rain, but also to protect against the cold. Both warriors and common people used them, but the one with a sword slot is for warriors. This "Dochu-kappa" is the most common type for commoners, made of striped cotton and navy blue.
