The large floral hair pin has some missing dangles. SIZE: large hairpin 6 x 2 ins (15 x 5 cm) smaller pins average 5 ins h (13 cm). Here is a pretty collection of vintage Japanese hair pins and accessories. The large floral hair pin is made of hand beaten metal with three dimensional petals. It does have some missing dangles but is still very attractive. The other ornaments comprise five faux coral ball topped hair ornaments known as tama Kanzashi. This type of hair accessory may be topped with a ball or bead made of jade, glass or a number of different materials. Red ball topped ornaments like this are traditionally worn in the winter months and green in summer. The final picture shows how such ornaments are worn in the traditional Japanese hairdressing. They can also be worn with a contemporary style similar to modern hair sticks. They can add an elegant touch to an updo or a traditional French twist. Western style jewelry such as rings, necklaces and bracelets was not worn in. Instead, women decorated their hair with a variety of ornaments which are completely different in character. In the Taisho and Showa eras Japanese traditional hairdressing became simplified into the "hisashi-gami" or low pompadour with a generally rounded form and a doughnut chignon at the back. Kanzashi style hair pins were stuck into the chignon at all angles in order to better display them.
