Japanese Vintage Clothing Chest Isho Tansu small type red lacquered. Material: Japanese Zelkova wood and Metal. The red lacquered wood is very unique. 63cm (with legs 72.5cm)×D. 24.8inch (with legs 28.35inch)xD.Usually Tansu does not have legs but previous owner made removable legs. More convenient for western interior. This is a small clothing chest "Isho tansu" used to keep kimono and handled with care. In the past, a new bride would generally bring a tansu with her as a part of a dowry. Since it was one of the principal features of the drowry, the tansu was often made in a extravagant fashion. In certain areas of Japan, it was a customary to exhibit the daughter's dowry to all relatives and neighbors when she moved to her new home, another reason for choosing particularly magnificient tansu. The samurai type tansu is made of series of small drawers with a small, hinged door on the right while the left side is made up of several medium sized drawers. A longer drawer was used to hold pillows and other drawers to store clothes. The tansu was originally produced for lower to middle class samurai.
