This is an antique Japanese sake daru (sake barrel) from the early Showa Era c. It is all hand made and fired at high temperatures for lasting durability. There is a hand painted design of cherry blossom and a stream behind the letter. The ceramic shape incorporates a realistic rope weave throughout including on the lid (see pictures 6 & 12). The lid once had an inner rim of cork (now gone) to fit firmly into the barrel top. Also included is the original iron bale handle which could be easily removed (see last picture).
This large ceramic barrel shaped sake barrel measures 10" in diameter by 12" tall including original lid (25 x 31 cm). And remains in very fine. It is high fire glazed both inside and out. Great as a stand alone piece of art with very artistically applied calligraphy. It could also be used as a great wine keg for a party as it is completely glazed on the inside and with a 3 opening on the top is easily cleaned for re-use.Sailerking and the Shogun's Gallery of Portland, Oregon have been in the Japanese antique business for over 38 years, and highly value our customers.
